My Go-To Clean Brands: Summer 2023

After attending IIN, I set out to “spring clean” the products I was using on a daily basis. From food to skincare to cleaning products, I’ve overhauled everything to ensure I’m lessening the toxic burden I put on my body. If you are setting goals to live a healthier lifestyle, I know it can be overwhelming to look at your current products and find better options to switch to. It requires reading ingredient labels at the grocery store, researching a particular company’s quality standards, and getting lost in Google on your quest to find the “best” brands.

Let me make life a little easier for you. I’ve already done this research so I’ll share with you my current brand obsessions that meet my “Jess Mal” standards (no unnecessary ingredients that cause inflammation or expose your body to unnecessary toxins).

A little tip from someone who tends to try to perfect everything - take this list one group at a time. Do not overwhelm yourself and try to replace everything all at once. Small steps matter, you don’t have to “go big or go home” as you work to make changes to live healthier and cleaner.

Pantry

  • Barnana or Terra Plantain Chips - My go-to for when I’m craving something salty is plantain chips. I usually go for these over other types of chips as 1) my body doesn’t love when I eat too much flour too often (gluten-free chips are usually made of cassava flour, coconut flour, tapioca flour ) and 2) plantains are actually fruit! Both Barnana (their plain version) and Terra make their plantain chips with coconut oil and sea salt. When looking at “chip-like” brands, you’ll want to look for oils such as coconut oil or avocado oil and avoid oils such as sunflower oil and corn oil. More on oils here.

  • Seven Sundays Cereal - Trying to find a gluten-free, dairy-free cereal with clean ingredients is a difficult task. Shout out to Seven Sundays for bringing cereal (that actually tastes good) back into my life! Seriously, the Seven Sundays does not last long in my house. If you’re looking to switch up you or your family’s breakfast routine, try Seven Sundays. Want to add in a dairy-free milk option? I recommend Malk Organics.

  • Bulletproof and Purity Coffee - I’ve been working with a functional medicine doctor for almost three years now and one of the things I’ve learned is that my body is not great at detoxing. Because I want to lessen the toxic burden on my body, I choose to drink coffee that has been third party tested for mycotoxins. I like both Bulletproof and Purity and go back and forth depending on my mood :) Both are great options if you’re looking to switch out your current coffee for a cleaner brand.

Fridge

  • Malk Organics - I do not tolerate dairy, so I have to buy dairy-free milk to use in my smoothie and cereal bowl. I usually buy the unsweetened almond “malk” but they have other options - both in almond “malk” form and oat “malk” form.

  • GT’s Living Foods - To support my gut microbiome, I incorporate fermented foods like sauerkraut, kombucha, and yogurt into my routine. GT’s does not make sauerkraut but they do make kombucha and dairy-free coconut yogurt. I love this brand because they do not have any added sugars or other unnecessary ingredients in their products. My favorite kombucha flavors are Gingerberry and Lemon Berry. I usually get the “pure” coconut yogurt but the other flavors are equally as delicious!

  • Spindrift - I recently discovered Spindrift and am sad I was so late to this party. The ingredients are literally carbonated water and fruit juice. I cannot find any other sparkling water brand that does not have added sugars so this is my new go-to poolside drink.

Cleaning Products

  • Branch Basics - We recently deep cleaned our entire apartment using all Branch Basics cleaning products. I love this brand - ditch the toxic cleaning products and easily switch to toxin-free cleaning by purchasing one of their starter kits. They also have laundry detergent and dishwasher pods!

Supplement Cabinet

  • Hilma - Hilma was founded by three woman who were searching for effective and natural remedies. Their Gas + Bloat Relief is my go to when I’m in a digestive flare-up. When I traveled on a seven hour overnight flight, their Sleep Support supplement helped me fall and stay asleep for most of the plane ride. Those are the two main products I use but they have more options related to digestive support, immune/respiratory support, and sleep/tension support.

  • LMNT Electrolytes - When I was detoxing from mold, I was sweating A LOT and losing electrolytes with that sweat. To replenish my electrolytes, then and now, I use the brand called LMNT. I drink at least one packet a day, more if I’m fasting or upping my detox game. My favorite flavors are Raspberry Salt and Citrus Salt. To find your favorites, buy a sample pack first.

  • Prima CBD - For days when my stress and anxiety is getting the best of me, I grab a Prima Chill Out Chew. Made with organic hemp CBD and magnesium (and free of gluten and refined sugars), this is my go-to when I need to chill. The best part? No hangover or unwanted gut issues from alcohol :)
