This past weekend, I took part in a fun photoshoot for a friend and local business owner, N-Dowd. During the photoshoot, I had the chance to talk with some amazing women. One of the conversation revolved around how society tries to define what it means to be a woman. As young girls and even early into our womanhood, we allowed these norms of society to be the standards we had for ourselves. These norms that society creates no longer defines who we are or what path we want to take. As an extremely goal-oriented person, I am always working towards a personal or professional goal that I set for myself. This character trait of mine is both a gift and a flaw. A gift because I am always learning and growing. A flaw because I rarely let my brain relax. It was not until two years after college that I started to realize that I had been following the norms of society without question. As a young woman, I was worried getting a stable job, finding a husband, and having kids. Nowhere in my vision was there a worry about my own career and development. Sure, I was focused on doing well at my job and enjoying life, but I was not in a mindset that allowed me to develop myself as an individual. As I sit here and write on an early weekday morning, I can’t help but share the message that taking care of yourself should always be your number one priority.
